Every now and then, a project comes along that begins with a challenge and ends with an opportunity.  This recent Crystal Lake refresh was exactly that.

What started as an unfortunate water leak with pretty significant damage quickly became a chance for my client to reimagine the first floor of her townhome.  Once the repairs were completed and new flooring was installed, she was ready to put the pieces back together, literally.  Her goal: hire a local professional to make the space feel refreshed and cohesive again, while reusing as much of her existing furniture as possible.  Enter Moi!

Aside from adding a new cocktail table, end table, and media cabinet, everything else was about reviving what she already owned.  Projects like this prove you don’t need to start from scratch to make a space feel brand new.

We layered in beautiful new window treatments and hardware to better accentuate the volume ceiling, updated artwork, added a beautiful area rug, tossed in a few cozy pillows and a soft throw, softened manmade edges with greenery, and a topped it off with a few carefully chosen accents.  Those finishing touches were just what we needed to put the “cherry on the sundae.”

One of our biggest design goals was to brighten things up without losing warmth or coziness.  The trick was all in the contrast:  lighter pieces with mixed textures and blue accents to bring balance and lift the mood of the space.

Blue was the logical accent color, not only because it added calm and sophistication, but because it tied seamlessly into the adjoining den, which was already painted a deep, rich blue.  This connection made the entire first floor feel intentional and unified.

Of course, we couldn’t forget about her furry family members — two dogs of her own, plus foster pups she lovingly welcomes from time to time.  Every selection had to stand up to daily life (keeping plenty of paws in mind).  Durability met design at every turn, proving that pet-friendly can still be stylish.

In the end, what began as a stressful home repair turned into a fresh new beginning:  a space that feels brighter, cozier, and more “her” than ever.  Sometimes, ‘detours’ on the road of life can actually lead to the most beautiful destinations.
