I love it when a plan or, in this case a room, comes together.  We’ve been having fun helping a great, long-time client with yet another request.  After a recent primary bathroom remodel, her adjoining bedroom needed a new personality to compliment it.  So, she asked us for help refreshing it… for the second time.

In 2014, we had created a space that was more in keeping with trends and her style back then.  Reusing and complimenting her existing heavy, ornate furniture called for darker, more moody walls.  Grounded chartreuse green on the walls was coupled with a dramatic, geometric wallpaper accent behind the headboard.  Bedding and accents pulled it all together.

It wasn’t a wrong choice at the time.  But, by today’s standards, it definitely felt heavier and a totally different version of the calm retreat a bedroom should be.  So we decided to press Reset.

While beautiful, the first thing to go for a brighter more contemporary bedroom look was the accent wallpaper.  Once it was removed, you could almost hear the room take a deep breath.  We followed that with a fresh, neutral color (SW 9601 Symmetry) that instantly opened the space and made it feel bigger.  Bright, clean, and simple became the new direction, and everything else flowed from there.

Next came the furniture.  After quite a bit of searching, the oversized, highly detailed pieces were replaced with a solid wood bedroom set from a local Amish furniture store.   With clean lines and timeless proportions, the difference was immediate.  The room felt lighter, more grounded, and far more restful.  Sometimes less detail actually gives a space more presence, and this was a perfect example.

From there, we layered in the details.  New, stationary window treatments from Ballard Designs on “shortie” rods softened the room without blocking light.  A new ceiling fan added both function and a subtle modern touch.

Since the bed serves as the focal point in bedrooms, fresh Celeste bedding from Crate and Barrel became the star.  Two interchangeable quilts will make seasonal changes in the look and feel of the bedroom a breeze.

Next, we pulled in just a couple dark blue pillows and accents to complement the bedding,  Lamps, art, and carefully chosen accessories added just enough personality without tipping the room back into visual overload.

The result is a bedroom that feels calm, intentional, and easy to live in.  No more heavy drama.  Just a bright, serene space that actually invites you to unwind at the end of the day.

This transformation is a great reminder that a bedroom doesn’t need to be ornate to feel finished.  Sometimes the most luxurious thing you can do is simplify.
