Sometimes life throws us a curve. It’s just that simple. No one ever said it was going to be easy all the time. If they did, as my mom would say, they need “a good talking to”.
Not long ago, a friend and former client contacted me to let me know that she and her husband had decided to part ways. She was downsizing from their home we had decorated several years ago and was starting fresh. And when I say “starting fresh”, I mean it! Having been through a very rough time, she was ready to pick up and press on.
Someone once said, “You can’t start the next chapter in life if you keep re-reading the last one.” Those words of wisdom seemed to ring true in this situation. So, choosing to keep only very few of her most cherished belongings, we literally were starting almost from scratch.

“Clean, simple, light and bright” were the words she used to describe the new look she wanted. Finally able to decorate for herself and ONLY herself, an entirely different personality could be unveiled in her space. Gone were the necessary compromises of the past. In were the frilly, girly, cottage-y, cozy things that she envisioned for this new “all about her” living space.

With a fresh and light color palette, the addition of the basics necessities in furniture, repainting cherished bedroom furniture from the parents, and adding minimal new artwork and accessories, we were able to bring her vision of the future to life.

Given her new outlook, I found a small piece of word art for her bathroom that read, “When Nothing Goes Right, Go Left!” Those words seemed to capture the resilient spirit of this lady as she embraces the next chapter of her life. And being able to be a part of that rebirth is just another reason I love doing what I do.

While we left plenty of room for this client to ‘grow’ into her new space, there is something to be said for simplicity! The simple things in life make you realize what’s important. And keeping your decor simple and clutter free is another way of always making sure you’re ready for life’s next chapter.
