Decorating a Room Is Just Like Decorating a Cake
(How to Have Your Design and “Eat” It Too)

If you’ve ever watched someone decorate a cake with intense focus, precision piping, and a prayer that the frosting doesn’t slide off the sides, you’ve witnessed the same emotional rollercoaster interior designers ride when decorating a room.  The parallels are pretty uncanny.  Not following?  Let’s take it step by step:

Step One:  The Cake Layers — aka, Your Furniture Foundation

Every cake usually starts with layers which are the structure that holds the whole creation together.  After all, you can’t slap on frosting until you’ve baked something worth frosting, right?

Think of your furniture as being the foundation layer.  Whether the sofa, dining table, bed, or cabinetry, these are the sponge layers at the core of the design.  If they’re lopsided, undersized, or collapsing under pressure (think particleboard bookshelf), the rest doesn’t matter!  You can have the most beautiful draperies; but if your sofa looks like it wandered out of a 1980s basement, no one’s gonna admire your “chocolate ganache.”

Design tip:  Pick furniture that actually fits your space and your life.  It’s like choosing the right cake pan.  You wouldn’t bake a wedding cake in a muffin tin, now would you?

Step Two:  The Frosting — aka, Decorative Accents

Once your furniture “layers” are set, it’s time for frosting— the art, rugs, lighting, window treatments, and accessories that make everything look delicious.

This is where personality comes in.  Frosting is how you tell the world, “Yes, I have taste, and yes, it’s buttery smooth.”  Art? That’s your swirl of chocolate ganache. Throw pillows? Those are your piped rosettes.  Lamps?  ….Your glossy glaze.  Window treatments? The elegant drape of fondant cascading down the sides.

Design Tip:  Just remember:  frosting should always enhance, not overpower.  If your accessories are competing like bakers on The Great British Baking Show, you’ve probably gone too far!

Step Three:  The Filling — aka, The Subtle Layers That Hold It All Together

Between those furniture “layers” lies the often-overlooked filling, the textures, color palettes, and materials which tie the space together.  Maybe it’s the warm-gold detail that repeats from your light fixture to your cabinet hardware, or the subtle thread of olive green running through your rug, throw pillows, and artwork.

Good design, like good cake, is balanced.  Too much filling, and you’ve got a mess.  Too little, and it’s dry and forgettable.

Step Four:  The Finishing Touches — aka, The Icing Roses of Design

You know that one perfect flower or those delicate gold flakes that make you gasp, “Oh wow”?  That’s your statement piece—the chandelier, the bold artwork, or that vintage accent chair that makes your space uniquely you!

Design Tip:  Don’t be afraid to add that “ta-da” moment.  It’s what turns a “nice” living room into a “oh-my-god-where-did-you-get-that?” one.

Step Five:  The Taste Test — aka, Living in the Space

Finally, you don’t know if your cake (or your room) is truly good until you live with it.  Sit on the sofa.  Walk barefoot on the rug. Have a friend over who inevitably spills wine.  Does it still feel beautiful and functional? If yea, you’ve nailed it.  If no, well, a little design “frosting” touch-up never hurt anyone.

In the end, decorating a room and decorating a cake share the same philosophy:  Start with a solid base, layer thoughtfully, add personality with restraint, and finish with flair.

Because whether you’re wielding a piping bag, a paint roller or hammer, the goal is the same:  create something so beautiful people hesitate to mess it up, but can’t resist diving in!   And by all means, let us know if you need help putting the icing on your own decorating “cake”.
