Necessity is the mother of invention.  What could be more necessary than having a super basement to host your buddies in for the Super Bowl?  With the boys coming home from school on the eve of one of the biggest tv watching days of the year, any good mother would want to make sure everything was perfect for the Big Game!

This particular good mom and I met about three weeks ago to figure out what could be done to spruce up the basement in time for the big game!  No matter how much we tried to repurpose and move things around, it just didn’t feel right.  It quickly became clear what we really needed was some new furniture to bring everything together.  But with only three weeks to pull it off, how were we going to get it done?  Pressed for time and with my full schedule, we decided for mom to do the shopping.  We weren’t sure we could get absolutely everything in time.  But, with a head full of ideas and a big shopping list, mom was off!

Friday before game day, it was time to put it all together.  Miraculously, she had been able to have a new sectional, sofa table and card table delivered.  On top of furniture, she had gone shopping for a new rug, artwork and all the accessories to fit our new “game cave” theme.

After several hours placing furniture, hanging artwork and accessorizing, the space was game ready!

We were even able to reuse the previous leather sofa and loveseat in another part of the basement creating a cozy gaming area for the guys.

Just in time to kick off the fun!

Rock-aby baby… or something like that!  Had a lot of fun decorating for a baby shower this weekend. Simple, but elegant was the theme for this mother-to-be’s celebration.

We began by crafting 4 large flower arrangements as centerpieces using a combination of cream mini roses, lime green carnations, white dendrobiums, standard and mini pink carnations and, of course, baby’s breath for a new baby girl.  To give the floral centerpieces even more punch, we set them on clear glass cylinders filled with rice lights.20160716_123223

We created a countertop tablescape using ordinary boxes of different sizes to raise the catered trays of food to different heights.  Pink and white receiving blankets on top of a freshly pressed white sheet was all we needed to cover the boxes.   Fresh flowers coupled with a stuffed animal, baby bottles filled with pink n white gum and baby booties were all we needed to complete the look.

Pearlized white and pink helium balloons tied with organza were placed in every room.  Cut out letters topped the outdoor patio table with an orchid spray.  White & pink chocolate pearls filled martini glasses were scattered around.20160716_122757

Floral columns
Decorating for a wedding is both exciting and nerve racking! It’s great to be able to help a couple bring the vision of their special day to life! You hope that the results will be even better than they imagined. The stress arrives when you realize you only have one chance to get it right! I recently had the opportunity to do just that for a wedding in Sugar Grove, IL.

The grooms gave me a great deal of latitude when it came to designing the “look” for their event. Favorite colors and flowers were tossed around. The number of boutonnieres, corsages and bouquets was determined. An overall theme of ‘casual but elegant’ seemed to fit the ceremony, location and couple.

I decided to ground the arrangements with “wedding” white by including white gerbera daisies, white dendrobium orchids and white roses. For the needed punch colors, I chose yellow roses, dark purple statice. For texture, I added purple limonium. The grooms chose pastels as an overall theme for the wedding party’s attire so I wanted to add a light teal element to compliment the purple and yellow. Try finding real flowers in light teal! But I found a solution!

Since it was an outdoor event, I was responsible for decorating the dance & bar tents, wedding gazebo, pub tables, fence gates and a few other accents. I was also in charge of the wedding party’s flowers.

Gazebo florals
To create a solemn space for the ceremony, I wove faux “real-touch” stems into grapevine balls that were zip-tied into place in the corners of the gazebo and dance tents. Dried grapevine garland was added as needed to anchor the floral clusters. The clusters contained white gerberas, yellow and white roses, white and teal sprays of orchids along with green willow branches. After installation, hand-tied burlap and purple ribbons finished the look.

Creating a focal point for the ceremony was key. Columns were placed on either side of the space. On top, we crafted large, live arrangements of white gerberas, dendrobiums, purple statice, limonium with yellow and white roses. Each arrangement was perched on tall square vase containing clear and teal gems and a spiraled banana leaf.

Hand tied bouquets
The maids of honor carried hand tied bouquets of live white roses, gerbera daisies and dendrobiums accented with purple limonium. The mens’ boutonnieres featured live white roses with the grooms having an additional spray of dendrobium.

Tabletop “bud” arrangements were made for the pub tables using short square vases wrapped with banana leaf. Each contained a single white gerbera daisy, dendrobium orchid spray and a sprig of limonium.

The end result seemed to exceed everyone’s expectations and added to the joy and celebration of their special day. And while it rained cats and dogs during the ceremony, abundant love and beautiful flowers proved nothing could dampen their wedded bliss.
