It’s said that moving is the most stressful thing you’ll do in life, second only to a death in the family.  While change can be frightening, sometimes life’s journey takes you down a path that forces you to uproot your home and find a new beginning.  Noticing and accepting the signs that it’s time to move on is hard for us all.  One of this week’s projects was to put the finishing touches on a new ‘nest’ for a young family in Huntley, IL.

“Builder white” walls were the first task at hand.  Tapping into the trend toward gray neutrals, we built a color story for the main living areas around Sherwin Williams’ Anew Gray.  Blue-teal in the office and an earthy orange in the dining room provided punch colors we carried into the main living areas in decorative pillows, window treatments and other accents.

In addition to my client’s love of reclaimed and vintage accents, she shared a touching story about her love for birds.  Faith in the visit of a particular bird gave this mom the sign she needed to uproot her family and build a new home and life in the Chicago suburbs.

Bringing a few new pieces of furniture, new lamps, art and window panels into this home added the layers every home needs to create a cozy, “lived-in” nest.  During the reveal, my clients both were amazed at how warm and inviting their new home had become in only one day.

Getting to know a client well enough to create spaces that fit the family is the single biggest challenge for interior decorators.  My client made the challenge much easier by sharing her own inspirations including a story about a sign that gave her the courage she needed to move.  I guess you could say a little bird told her it was time.  That same little bird’s inspiration helped me pull it all together for this family in a way that immediately felt like home.
